This introduction to VoIP should answer all of the questions about what VoIP is, why you want VoIP and briefly describe how it works. By the end of this introduction to VoIP you will be able to see why OneWorldFon can help you save money at home and in your business without purchasing any expensive hardware or retraining of employees. Welcome to the savings of OneWorldFon.
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is widely referred to as Internet Telephony. It uses your high speed internet connection to make and receive telephone calls with or without a computer. The main advantage of VoIP is its ability to call anywhere in the world at a cheaper rate than ever before, but with the same quality as your normal telephone service.
With VoIP telephone service telephone calls are converted to a signal that can travel over a network until they reach the number you dialed. A traditional telephone system or, POTS – Plain Old Telephone System, takes a simple analog voice signal and routes it through a switch to establish a direct connection to the party you have dialed. However, with VoIP a telephone call is broken up into small packets of information. These packets are then delivered by various routes or networks and arrive at the other end of the call often simultaneously or even out of sequence.

At the other end of the call the system puts all of these packets back together in the proper order so rapidly that there is no apparent delay or loss of quality. Breaking up the telephone call into these tiny packets allows for a great deal of flexibility and management of the telephone signal.
There are several ways to make VoIP telephone calls. The one common thread with all types of VoIP calls is the requirement to have a high speed Internet connection. How you choose to place and receive your VoIP calls after that is up to you. The options run from no equipment to a small purchase of equipment which will allow you to make VoIP telephone calls without even owning a computer.
SoftPhone: A SoftPhone is really just a piece of software designed to act as your telephone on your PC. A SoftPhone is downloaded to your computer just like any other piece of software, installation is simple and takes only a few seconds and is available for the Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. OneWorldFon uses a SoftPhone called X-Lite by Counterpath which is very simple to use, yet is heavily loaded with features that you can choose to utilize. You can also choose to completely ignore these additional features without affecting your experience negatively. Along with the free download of the SoftPhone, your computer will need to have sound card, microphone and speakers. That’s it. You can be up and running, making long distance telephone calls with a simple software download. Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA): Probably the simplest way to use your OneWorldFon VoIP service is with an Analog Telephone Adapter or ATA. The ATA is a box that performs this function so that your telephone call can be transmitted over your broadband Internet connection without the need for a computer. In fact, you just plug you current telephone into the ATA and continue using it like before with one major difference. Your telephone calls are now being transmitted via a VoIP network to anyone you choose to call, anywhere in the world. The person on the other end won’t even know you are making a call to them using the latest in VoIP technology.
First and foremost is cost. VoIP is simply cheaper than a standard telephone network. Now wait, I know what you are thinking. If it is cheaper, the quality must be less than that of a standard telephone. That isn’t the case. VoIP is cheaper for several reasons. When long distance telephone calls first became possible, and up through 1960’s, a telephone call required a special voice channel through telephone company switches from point to point across the country until your call reached its destination. On top of that, during your twenty minute telephone call, that voice channel was reserved for your telephone call and could not be used by any other customer of the telephone company. That was expensive. Today things are a little better at the telephone company, they digitize your voice and combine it along with hundreds or thousands of others on a single fiber optic cable. This is better than it was before but there is still a dedicated pair of copper wires running to your home. Not to mention the wasted space on each fiber optic cable that can’t be utilized due to the inefficient method that is being used to transmit your voice. All of this waste costs money and the telephone company simply passes these costs on to you.
Second, VoIP telephone calls take advantage of vast networks that are already in place. There is no need to build special dedicated networks, they already exist in the public domain. So does the technology to take advantage of them as a telephone network. This “not having to re-invent the wheel” is a tremendous cost savings that is passed on to the customer.

So if VoIP is cheaper, quality is as good as a standard telephone then I must be giving up features that I am used to, right? Wrong.
